HEARTS FOR LOVE

UPDATE:

We have been so overwhelmed and thankful at the outpouring of love and show of solidarity this project has garnered. It has reached farther & wider than we could have ever imagined. AS OF TODAY (7/13/21), we have received over 10,224 HEARTS & we've been getting more every single day. Our new goal is 11,467. A total of 11,467 hate incidents against Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) persons were reported to Stop AAPI Hate (SAH) from March 19, 2020 to March 31,2022.

We are still happy to accept any hearts you'd like to contribute to our display, however we'd also love to shift the focus to community visibility.

OUR CHALLENGE TO YOU IS TO HELP US REACH 1,000 HEARTS IN PEOPLE'S WINDOWS. WHETHER YOU DISPLAY A SINGLE HEART OR A DISPLAY OF MANY,

WE'D LOVE TO SEE ORIGAMI HEARTS UP IN PEOPLE'S WINDOWS.

Send us a picture of your window display to Heartsforlove@paper-tree.com (please include your name & your city/state/country in the email!

ABOUT THE PROJECT:

There  is  a  crisis today.  Many  Asians, including our most vulnerable,  have become the target  of  hate crimes.  Join me in folding 1,000 Origami Hearts as  a  show  of  support  to  the  families  of  those  victims  who  lost  their  loved  ones.  Let's counter  HATE with  LOVE!

Folding 1,000  Origami  Hearts  is a spin on the tradition of folding 1,000  origami cranes in order  to realize a wish.  I  embrace this  tradition  by  folding  1,000  HEARTS as  show  of  LOVE - the  human  emotion  which  can  counter HATE and  create  POSITIVITY.

4/2/21:  WE HAVE REACHED OUR INITIAL GOAL OF 1,000 ORIGAMI HEARTS! THANK YOU SO MUCH! WE ARE OVERWHELMED WITH THE OUTPOURING OF LOVE!

WE WILL NOW BE EXPANDING OUR GOAL TO AN ADDITIONAL 3,795 HEARTS & CONTINUING TO EXPAND OUR FRONT WINDOW DISPLAY!

("3,795 incidents received by the Stop AAPI Hate reporting center from March 19, 2020 to February 28, 2021.", stopaapihate.com)

2/9/22: We are relaunching our campaign for Origami Hearts! The problem has never gone away, but we have been noticing a big rise in hate crimes again, including many against AAPI persons. Stop AAPI reports that "From March 19, 2020 to December 31, 2021,  a total of 10,370 hate incidents against Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) persons were reported to Stop AAPI Hate (SAH). Of the hate incidents reflected in this report, 4,599 occurred in 2020 (44.4%) and 5,771 occurred in 2021 (55.7%). " [ https://stopaapihate.org/national-report-through-september-2021/ ].

5/16/22: As time goes on and new reports come out, our goal changes. The number of hate incidents against Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) persons  reported to Stop AAPI Hate from March 19, 2020 to December 31, 2021, now totals 10,905 . Of the hate incidents reflected in this report, 4,632 occurred in 2020 (42.5%) and 6,273 occurred in 2021 (57.5%).

7/25/22: As time goes on and new reports come out, our goal changes. The number of hate incidents against Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) persons  reported to Stop AAPI Hate from March 19, 2020 to March 31, 2022, now totals 11,467.

Heart folded from template

Linda Mihara on KTVU Fox 2 with Jana Katsuyama 4/8/21

"The power of paper. In the face of recent anti-Asian hate and attacks nationwide, San Francisco origami artist Linda Mihara is  launching an effort to combat hate, inspired by a Japanese tradition and the art of origami.

Origami paper folding is about transformation,  looking beyond a flat surface and seeing it come to life in three dimensions."

    AFP NEWS AGENCY INTERVIEW

An SF paper store is displaying thousands of origami hearts with positive messages, to show support for the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community in the city after a wave of anti-Asian attacks. Linda Mihara, an origami artist and owner of the paper store "Paper Tree", says she has received over 4,000 origami hearts, which she displays in her store's window. "I wanted to do something that would counter the hate," she says. "And so, the best way to counter the hate is with love."
